GREENING ISLAND HOUSE

In October 2014, Island House was proud to be awarded GreenMark Level 2 accreditation. This was thank to great efforts of our staff, tenant groups and volunteers in implementing our GREENING ISLAND HOUSE project from 2008-2014.

GREEN  MARK

In 2008-09, we developed new environmentally friendly policies and protocols to help us become more green. We worked with the London Metropolitan University to produce a GREENING MANUAL which we made available to other local voluntary sector organisations to try to spread the greening message.

GREEN SPACES

In 2009-10, the Island House rear garden was redeveloped, creating a designated, safe play area for toddlers, a patio and barbeque area, a wicker den and new storage sheds. This involved installing a new child friendly fire escape, a new water play and sand pit, climbing frame with slide and fruit/herb planting beds. Thanks to IDCF and LBTH Early Years for Capital grants that helped make this possible.

GREEN WORKS

In 2010-11, we commissioned a greening survey to investigate possible ways we could improve our energy efficiency and then invested in making some significant improvements. This included Veolia Environmental Services funding new double glazing throughout Island House, introducing water meters and water saving measures, new energy saving timer clocks on our water heating system and more energy efficient lighting.

GREEN WORKPLACE

In 2011-12 Island House worked with ELBA to help create a more healthy and environmentally friendly working environment for our staff and users. This included creating a secure cycle park area and purchasing a Staff Bike, which is available to anyone at Island House for any journey, to help reduce dependence on motorised transport.

Our CanDo projects also encourage ACTIVE TRANSPORT and we have helped volunteers set up numerous new walking clubs and cycling projects around the local community.

GREEN ENERGY

In October 2012, PHOTO-VOLTAIC Panels were installed at Island House so we could generate our own electricity. Of the 10kW system installed by EvoEnergy Ltd, we use most of what we generate during opening hours and the remainder is exported to the national grid.

GREEN CHAMPIONS

2009 - ongoing : Every organisation based at Island House has appointed a Greening Champion. The Greening Champions meet to review our greening procedures and suggest ideas for continual improvement. This is centred around implementing the waste hierarchy in all our choices.

GREEN ACCREDITATION

Oct 2012: In October 2012 we were formally assessed and awarded GreenMark accreditation (Level 1). With our new photovoltaic panels fitted later the same month now fully operational, we hope to achieve Level 2 in 2014.

GREEN ACCREDITATION

Sep 2014: In September 2014 we were formally assessed and awarded GreenMark accreditation (Level 2). Thanks to Gully and Shahina for all their hard work in helping us achieve this quality mark.
